*Below are photographs of a research site on the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, from studies conducted by the University of Massachusetts in 2003. The photographs give an idea and look into the world of glacier research and the kinds of materials and methods used. The fieldwork present in these photographs was conducted on the Hazen Plateau to investigate mass balance, ice margins, and seasonal variations in this environment. The fieldwork they did on the Hazen Plateau in 2003 was a combination of GPS surveys of the ice margins located on the Murray Ice Cap and Simmons Ice Cap. The researchers found that both of the ice caps had experienced "considerable marginal recession since 2001" which they calculated out as to having resulted in a reduction in total ice cap area of ~3.5% (Murray Ice Cap) and ~9% (Simmons Ice Cap) since 2001 [Carsten Braun, Sept. 9 2003 - http://www.geo.umass.edu/climate/hazen/field23.html].
