Seward Glacier

Location:
Seward Glacieris in Alaska and its head is in the Yukon in an ice field near the head of Columbus Glacier. The trend of Seward Glacier is East and Southwest towards Malaspina Glacier (USGS, 2007).

Glacier Characteristics:

• Seward Glacier is a vast ice field (Clarke et al, 2002)
• There is a lot of accumulation because of the high rate of snow precipitation
• Seward fill a basin 70 km wide and 25 km long
• From the west, Seward is fed by the eastern region of the Bagley Ice Valley (Ford et al, 2003)
• The north and south areas of the Bagley Ice Valley fed Seward through cirques and hanging glaciers (Ford et al, 2003)

Length:

• Seward Glacier is greater than 1200 km^2 (Clarke et al, 2002)

Thermal Regime:

• Temperate (Clarke et al, 2002)

Interesting Facts:

• Named for William Henry Seward, 1801-72 (United States Geological Survey, 2007)
